Have you ever wondered what hypnosis is and how it works? You're not alone. Hypnosis is often misunderstood, but it's actually a very interesting phenomenon. Neuroscientists and medical doctors are now starting to talk about hypnosis more and more because they're realizing just how beneficial it can be. In this blog post, we'll explore some of the ways that hypnosis can be helpful and we'll look at some of the research that supports its efficacy. We'll also discuss why hypnosis is becoming more popular among healthcare professionals. So, if you're curious about hypnosis this is the blog post for you!

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a non-invasive method to alter the state of the brainwave and nervous system to enhanced state of relaxation. In specific, qualified hypnotists or hypnotherapists use relaxation techniques called inductions to relax your mind, brain, nervous system, and body at the same time. This induced relaxation allows your mind to be more open to helpful suggestions. This means that you can be more easily influenced by the things around you. While this may sound like a bad thing, it can actually be quite beneficial. For example, if you're trying to quit smoking, a hypnotist or hypnotherapist may be able to help you by suggesting that cigarettes are no longer appealing, or reduce the level of stress by suggesting more beneficial stress trigger reactions. Why hypnosis works better than other methods is because, in the state of hypnosis, you can access directly your subconscious mind that many of us are not so familiar what the subconscious mind is and what it does for our daily lives. If you're interested in learning more about the subconscious mind, please visit my podcast, Two Naked Hypnotherapists, episode #2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 18, or 29 for more detail information. But in the nutshell, hypnosis or hypnotherapy allows you to access the information storage (about your whole entire life) and you get to upgrade the old and outdated information so you can upgrade your life faster.

In the recent episode #60 of the Huberman Lab Podcast by Dr. Andrew Huberman, a neurobiology professor at Stanford School of Medicine, discussed the effectiveness of hypnosis in the medical field with Dr. David Spiegel MD, Associate Chair of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Director of the Center on Stress and Health and Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. I am a big fan of Dr. Spiegel's work, he has more than 40 years of clinical and research experience with hypnosis, stress physiology, and psychotherapy. Dr. Spiegel explains how to determine your level of ‘hypnotizability’ and teaches the audience how hypnosis works at the neural circuit level to enhance cognitive flexibility. According to NYC Hypnotist, Jeffery Rose, individuals who underwent hypnosis were more likely to keep their New Year's resolutions than those who did not. Researchers discovered in another study that hypnosis may be beneficial for those suffering from irritable bowel syndrome. In a study conducted by SLU (St Louis University) Physician's Group, over 75% of their IBS patients improved their IBS symptoms with hypnotherapy treatment, and some of them completely recovered from IBS. Speaking of IBS and hypnotherapy, I shared my IBS experience and a few types of research on IBS and hypnotherapy on my podcast, Two Naked Hypnotherapists Episode # 28, please be sure to check it out after this blog!

There are over a hundred of studies concluding the 70 to 80 percent of people with chronic pain experience pain relief with hypnosis. Michael Clark, director of the Pain Treatment Program at John Hopkins University, said there isn't overwhelming evidence that hypnosis is effective for chronic pain, but there is evidence nonetheless. Another pain related study by University of Utah looked into the effectiveness of hypnosis on people with chronic pain. They found 29% of people experienced immediate pain relief and decrease of their desire for pain medication with a single hypnosis session.

Dr. Bruce Lipton is one of the greatest biologists of our time, and in my opinion, the most sincere and positive scientist I've ever known. His New York Time bestselling book, The Biology of Belief is an eye-opening insight into who we are, what we are, and how we can enhance our health and life by understanding our incredible mind and body. He speaks often about the power of the subconscious mind which we can use it to better our health or sabotage ourselves instead, and how self-hypnosis can support the process of reprogramming the deep-seated unconscious beliefs that do not support us.

So why is hypnosis becoming more popular among healthcare professionals? There are a few reasons. First of all, hypnosis is a non-invasive treatment. This means that it doesn't involve any kind of surgery or medication. Second of all, hypnosis is affordable and accessible. And third of all, hypnosis has been shown to be effective for a variety of different conditions such as chronic stress, anxiety, IBS, smoking cessation, addictions, pain management, childbirth, and weight loss.
